Where the fish begins to stink

On the side of the Pescheria that runs along the rio de le Beccarie, beneath the great external staircase climbing to the first floor, open two wrought-iron gateways. Come up to the larger one: on the lintel, forged letter by letter, runs a Latin inscription — PISCIS PRIMUM A CAPITE FOETET: ’the fish begins to stink from the head’. It is a motto with a double edge.
