Between the Campo delle Beccarie (square) and the Calle dei Botteri, behind the Rialto market, this calle (street) with its sotoportego (covered passageway) preserves the name of a trade: the ’cappeller’, the hatter who had his workshop here and who still existed when Tassini wrote his Curiosità, a century and a half ago. But older Venetians called it otherwise: the sotoportego and the calle were ’della Pigna’, the branch ’del Pero’ — two surnames of families of the parish of San Cassiano, and the arms of the Dalla Pigna are still carved on the sotoportego wall: not just any pine cone, but the sign of a spicer’s fondaco that became a family name.
