At the tip of the island of Rialto, where the Grand Canal makes its great bend, stands the Pescheria Nuova: the porticoed loggia where fish has been sold for more than a century, in a building that looks Gothic but dates from 1907, the work of the architect Domenico Rupolo and the painter-sculptor Cesare Laurenti, in that ’cold inspiration’ of the Venetian 15th century that the guidebooks condemned but which has entered the Venetians’ eyes as if it had always been there — solemnly inaugurated on 28 April 1907, for the seventh Biennale.
