Not thirty monuments: nearly all of Venice.

Churches, palaces, squares and bridges, but also the stone lion in a corner or the odd name of a lane. Every place has its story, what to look at, curiosities and photos with the name of who took them.

Inside St Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace you go room by room.

Sestier de CannaregioCorte de i angoli

What you only see in Venice if you know.

More than 200 hidden corners: the plaque the prefect had rewritten, the wicker well, the sundial on the Basilica, the off-centre lion of the Clock Tower. Some are free, in the St Mark’s area.

All the hidden corners

Serious historical research.

Calletta starts from Giulio Lorenzetti’s historic guide, “Venezia e il suo estuario”, and from other historical books, such as Giuseppe Tassini’s “Curiosità veneziane” and Emmanuele Cicogna’s inscriptions. Every fact we add is checked against at least two sources, or one authoritative source. The photos are real, with author and licence.

Sestier de CasteloFondamenta de le domande

The questions everyone asks.

What is the best audio guide for Venice?

It depends on what you are looking for. If you want the guide that tells the most places out loud, in more languages and with a single payment, Calletta tells 1,230; the most downloaded app we compared has 191. The comparison, with dates and sources, is on its own page.

How many hours of audio are there?

745 hours in total, across the 10 languages. In a single language it goes up to 99 hours. You don’t have to listen to everything: pick your places.

Does it work without internet?

Yes. The guide and the itinerary audio download before you leave, on your hotel’s wifi; on the street the downloaded map and pages work even without a connection.

Does the GPS work in narrow lanes?

Calletta doesn’t rely on your phone’s GPS alone: it combines it with the map of the lanes, your steps and the compass, and learns the length of your stride on its own. The dot stays on the lane even when the signal bounces off the walls.

Is there an iPhone version?

Coming soon: the iPhone version is being tested. Today Calletta is for Android.

What can I try for free?

14 places in the St Mark’s area with audio: the square, the bell tower, the Bridge of Sighs and the main pages of the Basilica and the Doge’s Palace (the interior rooms are in the full version). Plus the map with fountains and toilets, and the diary. For the other places you see name, photo and first lines.

How much does the rest cost?

6,99 € once until 2 February, then 9,99 €. It’s an in-app purchase, not a subscription: it doesn’t renew.

In which languages?

Italian, English, Spanish, French, German, Portuguese, Polish, Chinese, Korean and Japanese: pages and audio.

Are the voices real people?

No, they’re synthetic voices. The texts are rewritten to be listened to and checked by hand.

Can I get a refund?

The purchase goes through Google Play (and the App Store): their refund rules apply. If you have a problem write to supporto@calletta.it and we’ll help.

Who is behind Calletta?

Calletta is an audio guide made with care for people walking in Venice: the texts are rewritten from historical books and checked by hand. Who publishes it and how we handle your data are written in the Terms of use and the privacy policy; for any question write to supporto@calletta.it.

Do I have to sign up?

No: no name, no email, no password. Your position is needed on the phone to guide you and doesn’t go to our server without your consent.
