Just behind the church of San Giovanni Crisostomo, this calle (narrow street) opens up. By Venetian standards, it is “wide” and has a name straight out of a sailor’s tale. Cagnoletto — also spelled cagnoleto — means smooth-hound, a small shark found in the Adriatic. There is a play on words here: in Venetian, cagnoleto also means “little dog”, and in English this fish is called a dogfish, drawing on the same image.
