The plaque says: ’From 1792 to 1797, in free study, the sad and ardent youth of Ugo Foscolo ripened here.’ Six years in a modest house in a campo at the far eastern edge of the city. And speaking of names: that ’de le Gate’ has nothing to do with cats — it comes from ’dei Legati’, the papal legates whom the Serenissima lodged in these houses before the nunciature moved towards St Mark’s.
