Piazzale Roma is the only piece of Venice where wheels still beat on asphalt: the great open space at the end of the Ponte della Libertà, inaugurated on 25 April 1933 as the city’s motor-vehicle terminus, with the imposing Rationalist multi-storey car park — Miozzi’s reinforced concrete and its helical ramps immediately made the specialist press of half Europe — which until the 1950s was the largest covered car park on the continent.
