At the westernmost limit of Venice, squeezed between the garages of Piazzale Roma and the People Mover track, survives one of the city’s most beautiful Gothic facades: Sant’Andrea della Zirada, founded in 1329 as a hospice for poor women commissioned by four Venetian noblewomen. The name recalls the ’turn’ - the zirada - that the canal de Santa Chiara made towards the lagoon, when the churchyard here was a meadow looking out over open water.
