The large pale dial on the eastern tower of the Porta da Mar is a sundial: the gnomon casts the sun’s shadow onto the hours, and the frame around it is no ordinary frieze but a knotted sailor’s hawser carved in marble. The twin tower, the western one, carries a mechanical clock instead: two ways of measuring time, facing each other on the water gate of the Arsenale.
