The gateway that closes Campo dell’Arsenale (campo is Venetian for square) is Venice’s first true Renaissance triumphal arch, erected when the fall of Constantinople made it urgent to revive the naval power of the Serenissima (the Republic of Venice): the model was the Arch of the Sergii in Pula, and the work was completed in 1460. From then on the gate grew together with the Republic’s victories.
