Along the rio dei Carmini (a canal) — which in this stretch is itself called Rio Briati — between Campo Santa Margherita and San Sebastiano, the Fondamenta Briati (a fondamenta is a canalside street) owes its name to a man who defied Murano: Giuseppe Briati, the master glassmaker who in 1739 obtained from the Ten permission to light a crystal furnace in the centre of Venice — the first exception after four and a half centuries of prohibition.
