In the campiello closed off by Pietro Lombardo’s marble screen stands the oldest Scuola Grande of Venice still functioning: a lay confraternity of ’battuti’ (flagellants) founded in 1261 near Sant’Aponal and moved here in the 1300s, where it keeps a relic of the True Cross — donated in 1369 by Filippo de Mézières, chancellor of the kingdoms of Jerusalem and Cyprus, who handed it over on his knees and bareheaded after swearing on the Gospels.
