A medieval courtyard that has survived intact in the heart of San Polo: the Campiello della Scuola (a campiello is a small square) preserves the position and dimensions of the courtyard from which it grew, when the Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista — the confraternity of the ’battuti’ (flagellants) founded in 1261 — settled here, renting rooms in a Badoer hospice beside the family church — and in 1414, made rich by devotion to its relic of the Cross, bought the hospice outright.
