Two names, two shops, neither surviving: this calle (street) in Santa Croce, which skirts the Scuola Grande di San Giovanni Evangelista towards the Fondamenta de la Latte, was called dell’Ogio and del Cafetier — an oil depot on one side of memory, a coffee shop on the other. As early as 1872 Tassini recorded with an antiquary’s precision: ’neither oil depot nor coffee shop have any existence on this site any more’.
