The Rialto Bridge is the geometric and symbolic heart of Venice: for centuries the only stable link between the two banks of the Grand Canal, ’citra et ultra canalem’, at the point where the city was born and traded. At its feet still stands the Palazzo dei Camerlenghi, the seat of the State coffers and of the Banco Giro, with the most feared prisons of the Republic.
