Just beyond the Rialto Bridge, on the San Polo side, the long porticoed building overlooking the Grand Canal and the Ruga degli Oresi is the Palazzo dei Dieci Savi: built from 1521 to a design by Antonio Abbondi, known as Scarpagnino, the great rebuilder of Rialto after the fire of 1514, it was for the whole duration of the Republic the seat of the Dieci Savi alle Decime — the Ten Sages of the Tithes — that is, as we would say today, the tax offices of the Serenissima.
