This Gothic façade on the Grand Canal has a secret written across it in large Latin letters: the palazzo you see dates almost entirely from 1777. A fire in 1774, which chronicles blamed on a maid’s negligence, destroyed the Michiel family’s 15th-century building. The Republic, mindful of the family’s past service — it had given Venice three doges — paid for the rebuilding, completed in just three years.
