At the beginning of the Strada Nova, in Campo Santi Apostoli, the sober Istrian-stone façade of the Scuola dell’Angelo Custode hides a double story: the confraternity of the Suffragio dell’Angelo, founded in 1577, obtained the plot on the rio and in 1713 had its seat built to a design by Andrea Tirali; two centuries later the building was bought by the merchants of the nearby Fondaco dei Tedeschi and since 27 May 1813 has housed Venice’s Evangelical Lutheran church, the oldest Protestant community in Italy.
