At the far end of Campo Santa Maria Mater Domini — one of the most intact medieval glimpses of the city — at number 2123 there is a palazzetto that tells three centuries in one façade: early-14th-century Gothic on the piano nobile, Renaissance above, and on the sill a small ’walking’ lion that Venetians call the marchetto, which tradition links to the most famous conspiracy in Venetian history — the mark said to be stamped on houses confiscated from rebels.
