Set back on the Calle della Chiesa, a step from the medieval campo that bears its name, Santa Maria Mater Domini does not face the campo but the side calle. Tradition has it founded in 960 by the Zane and Cappello families; rebuilt from scratch in the early Cinquecento and consecrated in 1540, it is a small jewel of the Venetian Renaissance (Codussi or Sansovino — critics still debate).
