The two little white towers that close the small harbour look as old as the basilica, and many mistake them for Palladian works. In truth they tell the lowest period in the island’s history, the one that followed the fall of the Republic. In 1806 Napoleon suppressed the monastery and the monks were gathered together at Santa Giustina in Padua; a single religious, Placido Ragazzi, refused to leave the island.
