Two minutes from St Mark’s Square, behind the Cavalletto, this little square has had three names over eight centuries: Rusolo - a corruption of Orseolo, after the hospice founded by Doge Pietro Orseolo I and moved here at the end of the 16th century to make way for the Procuratie Nuove (the Republic’s new government offices) - then San Gallo, after the little church left standing by the institution, and finally Canova, because the sculptor died here in 1822, in a house that no longer exists.
