The plaque marking Tiepolo's house

Look up above the archway: a slab of white marble, set into the wall, recalls that ’IN THIS CORTE OF SAN DOMENICO / STOOD THE HOUSE WHERE WAS BORN / THE PAINTER / GIOVANNI BATTISTA TIEPOLO / IN MARCH 1696’. The house is gone, the corte (a courtyard) is not — and it is the one you see as you enter under the sotoportego (a covered passageway). Giambattista Tiepolo was born here on 5 March 1696, the last of nine siblings.
