Everyone looks at the monument to Garibaldi from the front. Few walk round the pond to discover that, hidden on the back of the rock, there is a second figure: a young garibaldino (one of Garibaldi’s volunteers) in bronze, rifle slung over his shoulder, standing guard behind the general. The Venetians have given him a name — Bepi Zolli — and one of the city’s finest legends.
