Until the early 19th century, anyone passing in front of this church could have been in a boat. The façade looked onto the rio di Castello, with the Ponte di San Domenico opposite; only after the rio was filled in did the bank become the street now called Via Garibaldi. The painted clock was read from a boat or from the fondamenta, not from a pavement.
