At Venice’s easternmost edge, the street now called Paludo di Sant’Antonio carries its origins in its name. This was once a velma (a lagoon marsh), which the Great Council donated in 1334 to two citizens on condition that they firmed it up and made it habitable. A wooden house was built on the reclaimed ground and given to Fra’ Giotto degli Abati, who founded the church and monastery of Sant’Antonio there in 1346.
