The corte (a Venetian courtyard) in Castello lies behind the rio di San Giuseppe (a small canal). Its name is pronounced ‘Solta’, as recorded in the tax registers, and comes from the nickname of the Dalle Cipriote family, perhaps originally from the Dalmatian island of Solta. They were people of the sea and the oar: some Solta of Castello were caulkers at the Arsenale, while others held public office or pursued an ecclesiastical career.
