At the heart of the Giardini Pubblici, Napoleon’s public gardens at Venice’s easternmost edge, stands the palace that launched the world’s oldest contemporary art exhibition: the Palazzo dell’Esposizione. It opened in 1895 at the initiative of Riccardo Selvatico, poet and mayor, and was renewed every two years.
