Separated from Campo Santa Maria Formosa (campo means square) by an arm of the homonymous rio (Venetian canal) — reachable only via a private little bridge — Palazzo Malipiero-Trevisan has a façade that is almost a jewel casket: Istrian stone, Greek and Egyptian marbles, porphyry medals and cameos, verde antico and serpentine that make it appear bejewelled, as the nineteenth-century guides wrote.
