A small pinkish palazzo stands between Palazzo Giustinian Michiel Alvisi and the houses by the traghetto, almost opposite the Salute. This is Palazzo Gaggia, once Casa Alvisi and originally owned by the Giustinian family. More than a thousand years ago, an iron chain ran from its landing across the Grand Canal to the opposite bank, forming part of early medieval Venice’s defences against pirates.
