In Calle del Dose, a stone’s throw from Campo San Maurizio and the rio di Santo Stefano, stands the rich, correct classical façade — ’not licentious’, Fontana used to say — of Palazzo Da Ponte, erected in the second half of the 16th century for Doge Nicolò Da Ponte (1578-1585) and attributed by 19th-century scholars to none other than Sansovino.
