Opposite the side portal of the church of Santo Stefano, at number 3467 on the campo (square), juts the sober surviving façade of one of Venice’s oldest confraternities: the Scuola di Santo Stefano, founded in 1299. They call it ’dei Laneri’, but that is a mistake — the wool workers had their seat at Santa Croce; this was a devotional scuola frequented by artisans of every trade, stonemasons included.
