Campo San Maurizio (a Venetian square) retains an aristocratic calm just a few steps from the crowds around St Mark’s. The church facing it is a palimpsest. It may have been founded as early as 699, like San Lazzaro, or by the Candiana family, also known as Sanudo; it was dedicated to St Maurice and the martyr Adrian.
