At Venice’s easternmost edge, on the island that bears its name, stands the church of Sant’Elena, facing the lagoon beside the Parco della Rimembranza, where part of the old meadow survives. It began in the second half of the 12th century as a hospice for pilgrims bound for the Holy Land, when the island was a lonely strip of land, separate from the city.
