In the quiet campo of San Marziale, along the Fondamenta della Misericordia in Cannaregio, faces a very old church with a modest profile: founded, tradition says, on land already occupied by a squero (a small boatyard) — the Iconografia del Paganuzzi even dates it to 983, at the expense of the Bocchi family — and rebuilt by that same family in 1133, when it became a parish church, it was a three-nave basilica as the De Barbari map portrays it. Rebuilt in 1693 by the parish priest Giuseppe Pasquini and reconsecrated in 1721 by Patriarch Barbarigo, it shrank the plan to a single Baroque nave, with the flank dropping sheer to the canal and a simple bell gable.
