The church of Sant’Eufemia is the oldest on the Giudecca and one of the oldest in Venice. Tradition has it founded in 865, under Doge Orso Partecipazio, by the families of the Barbolani, the Jesoli and the Caloprini, recalled from exile to populate the island then called Spinalonga. It was dedicated to four virgin martyrs of Aquileia — Eufemia, Dorotea, Tecla and Erasma — but time has kept only the first in the name.
