On the Fondamenta del Megio, two steps from the Republic’s old granaries, a Renaissance 16th-century building keeps a Latin plaque: here on 4 April 1536 died Marin Sanudo, the greatest chronicler Venice ever had. The Sanudo claimed descent from the ancient Candiano doges; the house is 15th-century, with the pointed-arch portal and the worn coat of arms, and it seems he himself refaced the facade towards the bridge in 1506, around his wedding to Cecilia Priuli.
