Stop in Campo della Maddalena and watch how the city’s landscape changes just a few steps from the Strada Nova. Here the space opens out among low houses, irregular facades and chimneys rising from the roofs. At the centre is a wellhead of the early 16th century: for the inhabitants it was the visible sign of the cistern that collected rainwater, a precious resource in a city surrounded by salt water.
