In the heart of the Strada Nova, Campo Santa Fosca (a Venetian square, or campo) is a crossroads where present-day Venice meets its legends. At its centre stands the bronze statue of Fra Paolo Sarpi, the friar and scholar who defied the pope. Along one side is the 18th-century church with its Gothic bell tower.
