Ostreghe means oysters: the calle, bridge and fondamenta on the rio de l’Alboro probably took their name from the oyster trade that once took place here. The shellfish arrived in Venice already opened in baskets and were eaten in the street. Today the area belongs to the gondolas — the Santa Maria del Giglio traghetto rank is just a few steps away — but the name recalls a poor person’s food that became a delicacy.
