In the heart of San Polo, between Campo Sant’Aponal (a square) and Campo San Silvestro, runs a narrow calle (street) covered twice over by sotoporteghi (covered passageways): the Calle dei Sbianchesini. The name has nothing to do with laundry: the bianchesini were the scialbatori, the master whitewashers of house walls, and here – in the parish of San Silvestro – they lived and worked.
