The Theatines, an order founded in Rome in 1524 by Gaetano da Thiene and Giovanni Pietro Carafa, the future Pope Paul IV, came to Venice after fleeing the sack of Rome in 1527. The following year they took over an old oratory dedicated to St Nicholas of Tolentino, on the site of the present church.
