Hidden in a calle (Venetian lane) behind San Marcuola, the Scuola del Cristo is one of Venice’s most secret and best-preserved small confraternity halls. The confraternity of the Most Holy Crucifix, known as ’de la Bona Morte’, began in the 17th century around an image of the Redeemer hung on the bell tower and protected with boards out of devotion. In 1644, its members built this seat, affiliated with Rome’s Archconfraternity of Death.
