The coat of arms carved on the wall of Calle del Cristo in Cannaregio: the shaped shield with the Memmo ribbons, among the few signs left of the calle Photo: Wolfgang Moroder, Wikimedia Commons, CC BY-SA 3.0
Here, in Cannaregio, between Rio Terà San Leonardo and Rio Terà del Cristo (rio terà means a filled-in canal, now a street), the name of Christ appears three times: in this calle (street), in the filled-in canal, and in the nearby Piscina del Cristo. Behind the name is almost certainly a devotional image: a crucifix hung on a wall to light the passage.
