Salizada means ’paved’: these were the first streets that Venice paved, when the rest of the city still walked on beaten earth, and paving was a sign of prestige and important traffic. This is one of the oldest arteries in Castello, and almost its entire length is occupied by the side of a single palazzo: Palazzo Zorzi, the elegant Renaissance building that Mauro Codussi erected in the very first years of the sixteenth century.
