Rio Terà Antonio Foscarini is the tree-lined avenue linking the Accademia to the Zattere. Until the 19th century, though, water flowed here: this was the northern stretch of the rio di Sant’Agnese, a straight canal running from the Grand Canal to Giudecca. It was filled in and turned into a tree-lined street, which is why Venetians still call it ’rio terà degli alberetti’ — the filled-in canal of the little trees.
