Six hundred metres from St Mark’s, where the Fondamenta di San Lorenzo meets the Calle della Madonna, a stone bridge crosses the rio dei Greci and marks the gateway to Venice’s little Greece. The name comes from the Greek Orthodox community that lived here for centuries - the largest foreign colony of the Serenissima (the Republic of Venice) - and from its church, San Giorgio dei Greci, considered the oldest Greek church in the West.
