The Ponte dei Frati crosses the rio di Sant’Anzolo (a small canal), between the campo (square) of Sant’Angelo and the gate of the former monastery of Santo Stefano, in San Marco. The ’frati’ (friars) of the name are the Augustinians, who according to Savina’s chronicle in 1455 ’had a stone bridge built, and a gate that passes over the rio and goes into their convent’: bridge and covered passage were a single work.
