Eight steps behind the apse of Santo Stefano, and you climb into another world: the Campiello Novo is a small raised, secluded space, set apart from the square from which it is only a few metres away. The gentle name is recent and a little hypocritical: for centuries this was the cemetery of the Augustinian friars of Santo Stefano, and the Venetians called it the Campiello dei Morti (of the Dead).
