Beneath the houses of Calle del Perdon opens a sotoportego (a covered passageway) so dark that the little lamp of the shrine can be seen from afar: ’it is lit day and night’, says the inscription carved in wood at the entrance. In the shrine, beside the Madonna, a small relief shows a pope lying asleep — added in recent times to illustrate one of Venice’s most tenacious legends.
